Information for Parents – Autumn Term 2017
Topics for this term: Enchanted Woodland and Glow and Glitter
I hope you all had a lovely summer. We’ll start the term with the topic Enchanted Woodland - If you go down to the woods today you’re sure of a big Surprise! Foxes and badgers, and voles and mice, beady-eyes owls in the swaying tree tops. Beneath the leaves are tiny footprints…animal or imp?...You decide! Deciduous or evergreen? What can you find? Can you match a leaf to its tree? Can you match a petal to its flower? Let’s build a den, stick by stick and branch by branch. Or we could make a teeny tiny home for a woodland fairy! Then let’s party down in the woods with Mr Fox and all his woodland friends. We’d better not get lost…let’s leave a trail of conkers as we go! At last it’s time to rest by the woodland fire, listening to stories and toasting out sweet, gooey marshmallows. Yum, yum!
Glow and Glitter This project has a Knowledge and Understanding of the World focus and enables children to explore things that sparkle, glitter, glow, reflect, shine and twinkle. During the Innovate stage children should be encouraged to think creatively applying their previous experiences, skills and understanding to solve the mystery of the ‘Lost Presents’. This project is ideally introduced around Christmas time.
We will be learning rhymes, songs and reading a variety of stories linked to our topics.
Where possible we will fit our literacy, number, science, dance, IT, music and art into the topic too.
We will also be celebrating Harvest, Firework night and Christmas; this will also include cross curricular Literacy and Numeracy activities.
Days which PE kit will be needed : Dance will be on Monday
PE will be on Thursday
The children are entitled to use both the indoor and outdoor classroom during child initiated time therefore we advise that they are sent to school with a warm hooded coat, hats, scarves and gloves (all clearly named) We also recommend that they have a pair of wellington boots to keep at school, clearly named.
On Wednesdays please can children wear old clothes and on Wild Walk weeks a spare set of clothes would be a good idea.
Days homework will be set: There is no formal homework, but all children will bring home Maths and Literacy activities for you to explore as a family. Some activities will require things that can be found around the house; for other activities, what is needed will be inside a resealable bag. Every Friday children will choose a book to bring home for you to read with them. Please return the book in their book bag when they will be given another one.
Before reading develops they need to be able to pronounce the letter sounds correctly so that they can blend sounds together to make words. The children will start with picture books which need to be discussed and encourage their own story ideas. Once they can blend sounds together they will start to bring home books with words. Please continue to revise the Read, Write Inc. Speed Sounds 1. At the start of this term the children will take home an enjoyment book from the book corner. This is changed on Friday
Any other ways parents can help:
This year Wild Walks will be on Wednesdays. We will be going for walks in the locality and would be very grateful for your help on these walks. You will be given a list of dates and a form to return to us informing us when you are able to help. A minimum of four parent helpers will be needed each week.
Any other general reminders
Please send a pound coin (or £8 for the half-term) in a named purse or envelope to school every Monday for snack.
Children will need a pair of wellies in school. Please name everything.
Please make sure everything has your child’s name clearly marked on it.
We will be going out in all weathers, please remember your child’s coat.
Please practise putting on and removing coats, shoes and jumpers.
Please can you ensure that your child always has a named change of clothes in school.
On Wednesdays please can children wear old clothes. No uniforms.
On Friday, a child will bring home our class bear and a diary for the weekend. They will be asked to take the teddy on their adventures over the weekend and record what they do in the diary. Please return this to school on Monday so your child can show and share their weekend news with the class.
