Information for Parents – Autumn Term 2019

Class:

Year 2

Topic for this term:

Paws, claws and Winter Wonderland.

Welcome to Year 2

Paws, Claws and Whiskers

This project has a science focus and will enable the children to find out about different types of animals. We will spend the first few weeks learning about how to look after different pets and are due to have a visit from a local Vet; who will be able to share personal experiences and further information with the pupils. Following on from this, pupils will learn about large cats from Africa. Finally in the last few weeks we will investigate a selection of animals, which you may find while on a safari and think about which ones we would include in a safari park in Wales.

Winter Wonderland

In this topic, pupils will have the opportunity to explore ice and snow. The children will gain an understanding of the processes of melting and freezing. We will also discuss the changes of the seasons and festivals that are celebrated during this time of the year. Pupils will continue to develop their maths and numeracy skills through investigating symmetry in snowflakes and changes in temperature.

Days which PE kit will be needed:

Please bring in PE kit as soon as possible in a labelled bag. This can be eft in school until half term.  It would also be useful to leave a pair of wellies in school.

Any other ways parents can help (e.g. help needed with readers, items that can be sent in related to the topic )

If you have any information or knowledge that you could offer on different types of animals or have an unusual pet and are happy to share your experiences with the children, please get in touch.

We would appreciate your support this term with listening to your child read regularly. Book bags will be sent home on Thursdays.  Please ensure that these are returned to school on the following Thursday. Two books will be included.  Both from the stage your child is reading in school.  Please read these together encouraging pace, fluency and expression. Children will be practising number formation and it would be helpful, if you could continue to practise this at home. Children will also be learning to spell their high frequency words.  Copies of the high frequency words will be sent home in due course.

Many thanks-Mrs Anthony
