Information for Parents – Spring Term 2018

Class:

Year 2

Topic for this term:

Wriggle, crawl and beachcombers

Any further details about this term’s topic:

Wriggle and Crawl

Grab your coat and pooter – we’re going on a minibeast hunt! Sweep your nets in puddles and ponds and lift up logs to see who’s home. Then set up your own minibeast laboratory and observe their every move. Add notes and labels and ask your own research questions. Learn about bees and worms and butterflies too. Can you make a food chain to show who eats who? We will carry out investigations to find out more, like how far a snail travels in a day and how a spider catches its prey. We will make animations to show how our favourite minibeasts transform, perhaps a caterpillar to a butterfly or a maggot to a fly. On your belly, legs at the ready, it’s time to wriggle and crawl.

Beachcombers

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside! In this topic, we are going to become expert beachcombers. We are going to be heading to our nearest beach and will be searching for unusual and interesting objects, using our senses to spot, sniff and seek them out. Have you seen the rock pools yet? We will learn about the weird and wonderful animals and plants in their micro-habitats. Maybe we can kick back in a deckchair and do a little reading…what’s your favourite book about the seashore? We will invent our own amazing rock pool resident! What features will it need to survive happily in its watery habitat? Make a 3D model of your plant or creature. Bucket and spade at the ready? Splish, splash! Let’s get beachcombing…

Days which PE kit will be needed:

Please can PE kit be left in school for the half term.  Please make sure it is all labelled with your child's name.  a spare pair of pants and socks would also be useful. Thank you

Any other ways parents can help (e.g. help needed with readers, items that can be sent in related to the topic )

If you have any information or knowledge that you could offer on different types of minibeasts, creating animations or about sea creatures, please get in touch. We would appreciate your support this term with listening to your child read regularly and with practising reading and spelling their high frequency words. Please could you also help your child to learn the 2,3,4,5 and 10 times tables.

If anyone is able to help on Wild Walks we would be very grateful.

Any other general reminders.

Homework will be set at the start of the topic to be completed by the end of the half-term. Book bags need to be in every Friday.

Many thanks-Mrs Anthony
